A short interview to highlight my work as a visual storytellerand how I got to this point.
What’s your background?
Gabrielle: “I have always loved stories. I started to learn the art of visual storytelling by reading comic books as a child and as I grew up, I captured key moments with my camera, along with writing and illustration. When I graduated from high school to university studies, my curiosity gave me the confidence to try different things. I worked voluntarily with a local video production company, which eventuated into a television career. The skills I developed in multimedia technology gave me a creative edge, and since starting my business Salty Wave®, I have independently produced various projects for commercial entities and research organisations. I enjoy collaborating with people from the beginning right through to the end of the project to bring their story to life and am always looking for the next creative adventure.”
Why did you establish Salty Wave?
Gabrielle: “The flexible nature of media and technology is very exciting to me and by tapping into the latest digital apps, I create content that reflects the story a research team or non-profit wants to share with the global community. I find story telling a fascinating experience because it’s a bit like the Proppian fairy tale, with a ‘heroic figure’, the protagonist, some challenging experiences in between, an ending, not always the dream come true, but an ending that eventuates toward something through the lessons learned by the hero. That’s just one of the reasons why I established Salty Wave and I also get to do what I excel at – visual story telling.”

What kind of videos do you specialise in?
Gabrielle: “My business Salty Wave specialises in producing videos that enable more people to understand and appreciate the importance of research work and how it impacts their everyday lives. Depending on how scientists want to engage with their audience they can choose either an Explainer, Documentary or Promotional video to highlight their research work and what they are achieving. I liaise with the research team to gauge the type of story they want to share, the audience they need to target and the content to be highlighted in the video. The scripts I write are in line with their story, and I film either on site at the lab, workplace or out in the field to record the footage. I can also include all kinds of digital imagery and effects to support the message. Videos are produced for presentation online via website, social media, tv or cinema.”
